Your Frame – Your Future

We frame pictures. This limits and draws our attention to focus on what is inside that frame. Logically this makes sense, it is what we are trying to achieve. Framing our future is critical for our focus and ultimately for our success. The bad news is that if the frame that we place around our future is too small, we will never discover or accomplish the highest level of success.

Here is the good news – we control the size of our frame. Successful people in business, top performing athletes, and even rock stars never allow their frame to be too narrow. When their current picture is nearing capacity of the frame, they reach for more, they expand the frame. Many top performers develop the attitude that they are most comfortable when they are expanding the frame and feel discomfort when they are operating in the status quo.

Is the size of your frame fluid? Does it flow and expand, or do you get delayed (achieve less) with finding comfort in the status quo?

  1. So true. Lately I've been in the status quo and unable to expand the frame due to circumstances.

    1. A quick thought: If you are not where you want to be (assuming career goals here) a short stop with the status quo may be okay. Time goes by quickly though and resizing the frame will be vital for future growth. It is often said that we never stay the same, we are either moving forward or backward. Thanks for your comment!

    Frames are Boxes

They encompass and enclose. They keep things IN.

They are obstacles that exclude. They keep things OUT.

Most folks never see the box (frame), yet they let it confine them. Most folks do not realize that they are the fabricators of their own confining box! It is comfortable, it is a kind of self definition and it is both a limiter preventing doing familiar things a new way and a preventer of doing new things.

Redesign your frame to be a semi-permeable membrane. One that traps the unexpected, calls it to your attention and lets you decided how best to handle it. Think of it as a spider web - you are the spider with one foot (of 8) on the pulse of the web. When it quivers, you go investigate. You can either ignore or consume the opportunity.

Either way, you have decided and been empowered by your frame/box/web, it has not controlled you.

    1. I don't know, spiders are not one of my favorite things! Great comments though, and I agree that you control your frame! Thanks for the comment!

  3. When it comes to framing and influence it can make the difference between "Yes" and "No". The most common example is price. Price can only be high or low compared to something else. If you don't set the frame someone else will and your odds of hearing "Yes" are left to chance.

    1. Great point! Price is always a challenging subject and open to the expectations of the buyer. If we are the one selling, I think we are always hopeful for the "Yes." Any short specific tips for framing the sale and bringing someone to the - YES?
